See history of the SVT Lightning here: Ford made the second generation Lightning from '99 to '04. Ford made quite a few improvements to the Lightning each year. The '03 and '04 Lightnings had significant improvements and are the most desired and collectable. All '04 Lightnings were carry overs from '03 as the regular F150 was completely redesigned for 2004. Roush and Ford's Special Vehicle Team designed the Lightning engine; upgraded with such parts as forged rods, lower compression pistons, and a forged crankshaft. The '99 & '00 model put out 360 hp. The '01 to '04 model year the output was increased to 380 hp and 450 . of torque. The 4R100 heavy-duty transmission from the F350 diesel p/u was used in the Lightning to handle the extra power and torque. In 1999 and 2000 Ford used their regular truck shocks found in the F150. In 2001 to 2004 Ford switched to the high performance Bilstein shocks. In 2003/04 engine was improved with redesigned heads with twice as many threads to keep spark plugs more secure than the earlier engine design. In '01 to '04 the Lightning used the larger 4 1/2" driveshaft instead of the 3 1/2". The late '03 and '04 Lightning's also improved the sound system by replacing the cassette deck unit with a 6 CD head unit in the dash. The factory carpeting is also thicker and heavier on the '03/'04 Lightning. In 2003 the Lightning also improved security with the new push button Keyless Remote Entry on the drivers side door handle. The steering system was also retuned in 2003 to give it a firmer and more controlled feel. In 2003 the payload was increased from 800 lbs. to 1350 lbs. The SVT Lightning held the title of "World's fasted production truck" during its 5-year lifespan. It was not until 2003 that Guinness certified the title after a production Lightning was clocked at 147 mph.
